Ray Smith was an Army cadet in 1949 and later served in the Air Force on various bases in Canada and the United States. Along the way he received the North American Air Defence Command Commendation and the United States Secretary of Defence Commendation Award. After leaving the service in 1964, Ray became a Civilian Instructor with the local Air Cadet Squadron, while employed as adult Counsellor at St. Lawrence College. In 2005, Ray was asked to "help out" with the Cadets in Peterborough as a Liaison Officer with the Army Cadet League. Within the year he was asked to be the Zone Liaison Officer for Peterborough, Cobourg and Lindsay and later that same year was asked to be on the Board of Directors of the Army Cadet League of Ontario and in 2007 became Vice President.
